a green valley with mountains in the background

Into the Tian Shan

Glacial rivers, ancient juniper forests and towering granite peaks. Ala-Archa is an introduction to the raw mountain landscapes of Kyrgyzstan.

The mountains rise abruptly from the valley floor. Dark forests cling to the lower slopes, giving way to immense walls of exposed rock, while far above, snow and ice occupy the highest ridgelines.

This is Ala-Archa, a protected wilderness in the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range of the Tian Shan mountains.

Less than an hour’s drive from Bishkek, we headed straight there from the airport. The national park feels remarkably removed from the capital. The landscape is dominated by the Ala-Archa River, fed by snowmelt and glaciers, and surrounded by peaks that climb to almost 4,900 metres.

Established in 1976, the park takes its name from the archa, the juniper trees that grow across its mountain slopes and hold a special place in Kyrgyz tradition.

Following the mountain trails

There is no single way to experience Ala-Archa.

For some, the attraction lies in following the river through the lower valley, where the mountains provide a dramatic backdrop without requiring a demanding expedition.

Others venture higher, following steep trails towards the Ak-Sai waterfall. The landscape changes with altitude: forest gives way to rocky slopes, sweeping mountain views and the increasingly imposing presence of the surrounding peaks.

Beyond the waterfall, experienced hikers can continue towards the Ratsek mountain hut, an important base for mountaineers exploring the upper valley.

But Ala-Archa’s appeal isn’t necessarily found at the end of a difficult trail.

It is in the sheer scale of the landscape, the contrast between rushing water and immovable stone, and the opportunity to explore a mountain environment where nature remains the dominant presence.

The wilderness within reach

Across Kyrgyzstan, some of the most extraordinary landscapes require long journeys along remote mountain roads. Ala-Archa offers a rare opportunity to experience the Tian Shan without venturing deep into the country’s interior.

A morning walking beside the river can be just as rewarding as a full day climbing into the higher valleys.

And for travellers beginning a longer journey through Kyrgyzstan, there are few better introductions to the country than standing beneath these mountains and realising just how much wilderness lies beyond.
